21-SEPTEMBER-2023

PDI Competition 1

Dave Hall LRPS

The Club has a print league and a projected digital image (PDI) league. There are six competitions that count towards each league every year. The league competitions are divided into three categories, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Movement from one level to another is a matter of competition results; when they join the Club, beginners will start in Level 3 and more experienced photographers will start in Level 2. Subsequently, the most accomplished photographers can be promoted to Level 1. In a single competition, although you may submit two or three images, only the image with the highest score counts towards your total. Marks are accumulated through the year and the five best marks are used, allowing for members missing a competition or getting a bad mark but not suffering as a result. The judge, Dave Hall, is a regular visitor to CCC.

28-SEPTEMBER-2023

'Close-up Photography'

Peter Warne

Peter covers camera choice, lens choice, depth of field, filters and extension tubes and also looks at modern smart phones. Focussing is key to successful macro shots and occasionally subjects move, so he covers how to cope with this. Focus stacking, in-camera and in post-processing, is also covered, plus lighting and composition. All this is accompanied by some excellent images to illustrate the techniques. A detailed booklet will be issued before the talk.

Clubs in the East Anglian region are invited to submit two panels each and there is a limit of 15 clubs to ensure that there is enough time to give each panel a good critique. The winner is awarded the Dennis Clarke Memorial Trophy which is held for a year. Julie often judges at CCC.

'A Sports Photographer's Guide to Safaris'

Ray Lawrence

Our Chairman, Ray, usually gives presentations on sports photography but this is a departure from what he is most familiar with. So after his Pitchside to Paper, The Sequel and Bassett's, this is something a bit different, and perhaps not what you might expect.

18-JANUARY-2024

Themed Print Competition (4)

David Steel DPAGB

As part of the league there are themed print and digital competitions. Themes are chosen at the start of the season and each image is judged against the additional criterion of meeting the theme. To enter, each member must provide three prints, one for each theme, and on the night there will be three sub-competitions; there are no separate competitions for the different levels of experience, so everyone is in it together. The winner of the trophy is the member with the highest combined score, with the judge arbitrating in the case of a tie. The themed competition marks are also included in the league totals, so the league rules also apply. This year's print themes are 1- Cold, 2 - Reflections in Water and 3 - Tattoos. David is a regular visitor to CCC.

25-JANUARY-2024

'Street Photography & Photography in the Street?'

Roy Essery MPAGB

The ?street? is an interesting place to engage in photography. For the purest it demands a quick ?seeing eye? and truthfulness in its representation. For others it is a place to explore in the hunt for interesting and engaging images. Every day, every second is different. It demands a certain mind-set and approach, all of which will hopefully be explained.

01-FEBRUARY-2024

PDI Competition 4

Graham Parry

Marks count towards PDI League trophies at the end of the season. Graham is a regular visitor to CCC.

08-FEBRUARY-2024

07-MARCH-2024

Panel of 3 Prints

Andy Smith LRPS CPAGB

Panels are a useful way of presenting images. This is a competition for the best panel of three prints that hang together as a set. This means that they will have a common theme, maybe similar post-processing, and they complement each other such that they look as if they belong together. This adds an extra dimension to the photography and makes for an interesting evening. The winner is awarded the Burley Cup. The judge, Andy Smith, is a regular visitor to the Club.

14-MARCH-2024

'My Type of Photography'

David Steel DPAGB

Previous talks have concentrated on specific genres like people or travel, and David didn't have a talk covering the whole range of his photographic interests. The pandemic provided an opportunity to put such a talk together and, being based on projected digital images, it was easy to give over Zoom when clubs were not meeting face-to-face. With clubs now meeting together, this talk can now be supported with prints to view during the break. It brings together elements of existing talks as well as work not seen outside of his own club.

21-MARCH-2024

Themed PDI Competition (5)

Harold Mousley LRPS AFIAP

As part of the league there are themed print and digital competitions. Themes are chosen at the start of the season and each image is judged against the additional criterion of meeting the theme. To enter, each member must provide three PDIs, one for each theme, and on the night there will be three sub-competitions; there are no separate competitions for the different levels of experience, so everyone is in it together. The winner of the trophy is the member with the highest combined score, with the judge arbitrating in the case of a tie. The themed competition marks are also included in the league totals, so the league rules also apply. This year's PDI themes are 1- Textures, 2 - Triptych and 3 - Trees. Harold hasn't judged at CCC for a while so it's good to see him back.

Images of buildings, particularly black & white, long exposure, ?fine art' photographs of modern architecture, have become very popular recently. This talk will take us through image-making techniques and processing tips to create spectacular photographs of buildings, with examples from London, Paris, Venice & York, whether using a high end DSLR or just a mobile phone.

25-APRIL-2024

Panel of 2 & 6 Prints Competitions

Roy Essery MPAGB

These two panel competitions are in the same vein as the Panel of Three. The Panel of Two is a new competition so we will have to see how popular it is. Each member can enter up to two panels and the judge will choose a first, second and third, plus a small number of Highly Commended. A more demanding competition is held for the best panel of six prints. This is for the Cyril Chorley Memorial Trophy and also helps to choose entries for the external 'Panel of Six' competition held each year. Roy Essery judges at CCC regularly.

02-MAY-2024

'People and Places (Part 2)'

Colin Westgate FRPS MPAGB APAGB MFIAP

Colin is part of the Fotospeed Photographers lecture team and gives talks at Camera Clubs and other organisations anywhere in the country. He is widely experienced ?and has been a regular speaker for some 45 years. This is a follow-on from Part 1 of the same title and covers some of the people and places he has been privileged to photograph over the years.

09-MAY-2024

AV Trophy Competition

Vic Hainsworth ARPS DPAGB APAGB

For something slightly different there is an annual Audio Visual competition for the AV Trophy. This involves putting together a sequence of images and video with an accompanying soundtrack and may use a proportion of the images from other sources such as the internet. The most popular package used to create an AV is Pictures to Exe which will take jpgs, video clips and soundtracks and combine them together to produce a single executable file. Vic Hainsworth, this year's judge, has had many years of experience with AVs and is a regular visitor to the Club.

16-MAY-2024

'Jack of All Trades'

Colin Birch LRPS DPAGB CPAGB/AV BPE3*

I'll have a go at almost anything, with varying degrees of success, so this is an evening looking at a variety of genres and what I managed to achieve. This is a PDI presentation augmented by plenty of prints to have a close look at.

23-MAY-2024

Annual Awards

Daphne Hanson DPAGB HonPAGB

At the end of each season the Annual Awards look to recognising some of the best work of the year. Members enter their best images in the different classes and a judge is invited to pick out the best ones in each class. The only limitation to entering an image is that it hasn't been used in the Annual Awards before. Across the board the judge then nominates the best print and the best PDI, and finally, the Image of the Year is chosen by the members from these two images. We normally get several hundred entries so the judge assesses them all ahead of the Annual Awards evening. The ones shown on the evening are the best from each class and trophies are presented to the winners. Daphne Hanson is the President of the PAGB and a member of the EAF Executive. She is also a regular visitor to CCC.

30-MAY-2024

Annual General Meeting

Members can voice their opinions, choose the Committee and decide on the future. Presentations will also be made to winners of the leagues, Photographer of the Year competition and the Nice Cup which is presented to the member who has made a particular contribution to the Club this season.
