Ten top tips for winning photographic competitions by Hemant Jariwala
> Read the requirements of the competition and make sure the content / theme of your entry satisfies them exactly.
> Read the rules carefully when you first decide to enter, then again before the entry is posted to make sure it complies with them.
> Select only the highest quality work that shows an interesting composition, good technique and perfect exposure. Substandard pictures are just a waste of time, materials and postage.
> Use your imagination when producing a picture for a competition. Avoid shooting the obvious subjects, and make sure your entry is eye-catching. Most of all be original.
> Present your entry as neatly as possible, including your name and address plus a picture title if necessary and relevant.
> Send your entry well before the closing date, but don't be in too much of a hurry as you can use the time available to produce a better picture.
> When you've done everything and finally posted your entry, forget all about it. There's no point in worrying about whether you'll win or not.
> Join a progressive photographic society where you can benefit from the competitive atmosphere and exchange of ideas.
> If you don't win, study the winning entries and assess for yourself why they won and you didn't. It may take many attempts before you're successful.
> If you win, build on that success for future competitions; if you lose don't worry and try again. When I first started, my first goal was simply to get a mention in the runner-up list. Once I'd achieved that, I set my sights higher.
